50/54 days - into the heart of Africa - Congo   (code 22)

This journey is unique.
A country completely unaffected by the tourism, expects us. Nearly 1800 miles we will conquer the 3rd biggest country in Africa, from Lubumbashi to Kinshasa. Separated by a huge rain forest from the unrest provinces in the eastern part, this journey becomes everything else than a relaxing vacation trip through Africa. We won’t find any infrastructure, miserable tracks, a very doubtful network of river ferries and bridges.

The Congo ever has been a troubled country. Particularly in the eastern provinces near to Rwanda and Uganda there is still no peace. And what we call corruption is widely spread. Everyone must get along with it, natives as well as strangers.

This journey might bring you to your limits. I don’t mean the physical limits. Naturally such a journey is also physical exerting. But even mountaineering, a bicycle tour, a football game or the Fitness studio might be strenuous Travel for a long time on bad tracks and under hard conditions through the rain forest, not everybody is made for it. Nature is absolutely pure, maybe for some a not ending nightmare. However, for others it’s probably a unique experience in life. Who is expecting adventure à la Indiana Jones is wrong - that is Hollywood. But we get recompensed with an Africa of the original kind.

The active assistance of all participants is absolutely necessary during such extreme journeys, according to his/her talents and forces.
We will travel during the best period, the short dry season. Nevertheless that does not mean that no rain would be to be expected.
The map shows our travel route. Destroyed bridges or not working ferries might change the route.

Most of our camps we set up in the bush, in villages or we at the missions (Camping). These missions are a unique experience. Many of them are built in the early 20th century and show an extraordinary architecture. A stay in one of these missions is unforgettable.

We have to use sparingly our stock of drinking water (500 litres, 130 gal.US), because clean drinking water is very difficult to get. So we will wash us like millions of Congolese are doing: In the thousands of small rivers which come out of the raining forest or with the bucket shower and water from the pump in the villages.

The landscape changes between immensely vast grass landscape, bush and tree savanna and close rain forest.
Nowhere in Africa I had found such hospitable humans, so clean villages, and such an authentic Africa like here in the Congo. Look at the markets! Finger thick maggots, living or roasted, smoked larva or living termites. Roots of all kinds come into the pot. And the best, (nearly) all this is tasty, especially if you don’t know what you are eating.
But we have also large supplies bulked food with us, so our common food does not come too short.

In many villages and cities the old Belgian Congo from the colonial time can be seen. At that time a close network of small hospitals, commercial establishments and supplying bases covered the whole country.

In arts and crafts real artists are active. They don’t produce just for tourists. The art is a gift for a friend, for an estimated person or simply to the own joy.
Malachite and copper work come in the South of the country. And from the rain forest area beautiful wooden crafts made by noble woods. And unknown works from grass: Carpets, wall decorations and clothing.

After 600 miles we reach the provinces of the both Kasai the diamond provinces. We won’t expect that in some of these small huts diamonds are hidden, worth thousands of dollars.
These both provinces just can be visit with a special authorization, the so called "sauf conduit".

Reaching the capital Kinshasa we arrive in a bubbling, many million population counting metropolis. A big city which is moving right round the clock. The Congolese music is famous all over Africa and even in overseas. And no other people can move and swing their hips better than the Congolese’s. The atmosphere in the dance clubs in the city is unique and witnesses from an enormous joy of life, despite the difficult economic situation. But to that the Congolese is used since birth.

And what is the special attraction of the Congo? The attraction of the Congo is the Congo itself. Who ever was here will never forget it, in the good one as in the bad one.
